Trinity College Dublin
marked the centenary
of female students being
admitted to the university
by awarding honorary
degrees to seven prominent
women, among them Hilary
Weston, former Lieutenant-Governor
of Ontario.
Many women graduates
from Trinity have contributed
their talents to their
adopted country, Canada.
In the field of politics
one of the more notable
in recent years was
the Hon. Aideen Nicholson.
Among the seven women
awarded honorary degrees
by Trinity were a poet,
a judge, a scientist,
and a theatre director.
Poet, critic and writer
Eavan Boland graduated
from Trinity in 1966
with a degree in English
language and literature.
The first woman judge
at the European Court
of Justice, Fidelma
O'Kelly Macken, graduated
from Trinity in 1972,
and held the Averell
Devereux Lectureship
in the Law School in
the 1970s.
Olympic gold medallist
Mary Peters was another
Trinity graduate. She
won her gold medal in
the Pentathlon at the
Munich Olympic Games.
Garry Hynes, an Abbey
Theatre director since
1984, was appointed
Artistic Director of
the theatre in 1990.
Shirley Ann Jackson and
Alison Elliot were also
among the seven honoured.
