Canada and Ireland
business and investment
links
Evidence of growth in
business and investment
links between Canada
and Ireland came with
three announcements
within days of each
other in November.
The first concerns joint
participation between
Ireland and Newfoundland
in an eight-part drama
series for television.
Jointly funded by RTE
and the Canadian Broadcasting
Corporation, "Atlantic
Sound" is a drama
series about a young
man taking over a radio
station, which will
be shot in Ireland and
Newfoundland.
Michael Ahern, Ireland's
Minister for Trade and
Commerce and chairman
of the Ireland Newfoundland
Partnership, also announced
the signing of a business
agreement between a
Killarney-based firm
and a Newfoundland company
for the production of
an energy-efficient
heating tank.
A third major announcement
heralded the investment
of 150
million by a Canadian
company in a planned
leisure centre in Boyle,
Co. Roscommon.
It will include a five-star,
100-bedroom hotel, 293
luxury golf and forest
lodges, a championship
golf course and watersport
facilities.
The Newfound Developer
Group consortium which
is making the investment
has bought land adjacent
to the area's forest
park from six local
farm families for an
undisclosed sum.
The chairperson of the
Local Forest Park Action
group, Fine Gael senator
Frank Feighan, welcomed
the announcement by
the Canadian consortium.
"This development
will create up to 500
sustainable jobs and
is a major boost to
tourism in Connacht.
A major factor in attracting
this consortium is Knock
airport, which is about
a half-hour from the
site," said Senator
Feighan.
Hard on the heels of "The
Celtic Tiger on the prowl"
in our last issue, these
further links between Canada
and Ireland are a good measure
of confidence in the cultural
and economic climate of
Canada's closest European
neighbour.
