Salmon farm approval
denied in Donegal
Approval of a proposed
salmon farm in Lough
Swilly has been overturned
on appeal brought to
the Aquaculture Licensing
Board by the Lough Swilly
Preservation Group,
individuals, and An
Taisce, against a decision
by the Department of
the Marine to allow
the operation of a new
90-acre operation.
The successful appellants
sought to retain the
water quality in the
Lough, and the Board
ruled that the proposed
farm would create a
navigational hazard,
cause damage to the
visual amenity of the
scenic area, and endanger
a much prized blue flag
designation awarded
a nearby beach.
The decision gives heart
to environmentalists
in Ireland and elsewhere
who are concerned that
the decline in stocks
of wild Atlantic salmon
is attributable to pollution
spread by artificially
bred salmon fed in cages.
