European Parliament elections
Elections to send representatives to the
European Parliament were held in Ireland
in June. In both parts of the country there
were major changes.
In the Six Counties held by Britain, and
in the Twenty-Six Counties of the Irish Republic,
Sinn Fein won representation for the first
time.
It now has elected representatives in the
suspended Stormont Assembly (Belfast), Dáil
Éireann (Dublin), European Parliament
(Strasbourg), and in the case of Westminster
(London) has elected representatives who
are barred from taking their seats because
of the requirement to take an oath of allegiance
to the British monarchy.
As commented upon previously in this e-zine,
Sinn Fein is the only Thirty-Two County political
party in Ireland.
