Lough Derg prepares to greet many more pilgrims

Lough Derg has been drawing pilgrims to it for more than 1,500 years. Now it is preparing to receive many, more. Last month the lough's historic Station Island, traditionally associated with Ireland's patron saint, was the centre of ceremonies marking the end of a 25-year building and restoration program.

On Sunday, May 22, the Papal Nuncio to Ireland, Most Rev. Dr. Giueseppe Lazzarotto, travelled to the island to deliver Pope Benedict XVI's message from the Vatican for the blessing of a new retreat house, designed to accommodate a host of new pilgrims over the coming decades. He was joined by Archbishop Sean Brady; the Bishop of Clogher, Dr.Joseph Duffy, and representatives of other religious denominations.

Island Prior Richard Mohan said all the island's facilities had been renewed or repaired, with a particular view towards accommodating more young people. The restoration of the oldest church on the island was also included in the 25-year program.

In 2004 some 30,000 pilgrims from all over the world visited Station Island. It is hoped that the pilgrimage season can now be extended to 10 months annually.
